Obituary of Thomas F. Gambrel

Thomas F. Gambrel, 79, passed away Sunday morning, July 18th, 2010 in Wesleyan Health and Rehabilitation Center in Marion, after an extended illness.

Tom married his soul mate, Elinor, in their hometown of Muncie, IN, in 1951. An Army Veteran, he served in South Korea as a radio communications instructor and was chosen to provide radio assistance to Air Force TAC teams guiding fighter pilots to their targets at the end of the Korean War.

After studying drafting and tool design, he accepted a position in the design department at General Motors and relocated his young family to Marion, IN, in 1959. He worked in computer graphics tool design until he retired in 1989.

During his life he had many hobbies and interests. He loved the outdoors and enjoyed fishing, camping, music, bird watching and spending time with family. He was a gifted writer and penned many wonderful stories and poems. He authored and hand illustrated a book for his grandchildren called, "Journey to Indiana," that has since been enjoyed by his great-grandchildren. He was a wonderful storyteller and each of his children and grandchildren have listened with wide eyed wonder to his many stories through the years.

He enjoyed building and piloting radio controlled model planes, and is a past member of the "Converse Flying Eagles". Stemming from his days in the army, he also enjoyed the hobby of Ham radios. Tom loved working with his hands and handcrafted beautiful wall clocks for his wife and each of his children.

He leaves behind his loving wife of 59 years, Elinor (Riley) Gambrel; his son, Thomas David (April) Gambrel, La Fontaine; his two daughters, Leesa (Gambrel) (Jon) Friedman, Florida, Julie (Gambrel) (Scott Curtis) Jeffries, Marion; grandchildren, Robert, Kelli, Thomas Ryan, Tyler, Amara, David, Jennifer and Elaina; great grandchildren, Lundon, Meghan, Amber, Joshua, Zackery; two brothers, Jack and Bert; special friend, Terry Jeffries, and many other loving family members, as well as past GM co-workers and friends.

He is preceded in death by his father, Floyd; his mother, Louise, and lifelong friend, Wayne Hardwick.
