Obituary of Rev. Harold E. Bardsley

Dr. Harold E. Bardsley, IWU Trustee

March 22, 1935 — February 3, 2009

Florida — Dr. Harold E. Bardsley, 73, died Tuesday, February 3, 2009, in Florida.

He was the son of the late Orval and Katherine Russell Bardsley.

Dr. Bardsley earned his bachelor's degree in religion and philosophy from IWU in 1958. For 49 years Dr. Bardsley filled Wesleyan church assignments, pastoring in Miami Wesleyan, Sims Wesleyan and Greentown Wesleyan Churches. His ministry also including 16 years as Indiana North District Superintendent, 12 years as Assistant District Superintendent for Indiana Central District, and Assistant General Secretary for Education for The Wesleyan Church. Harold was in his 32nd year as a member of the IWU Board of Trustees. He has been co-chairman of the Board for 31 years. Dr. Bardsley served with five IWU presidents and was on the committees that hired most of them. He also received a Master of Arts Degree in Ministry from IWU in 1981.

In June 2008, Dr. Bardsley received a medallion from the denomination for 50 years of service. He also had an honorary Doctor of Divinity degree from IWU and had received a Meritorious Service award from the IWU Alumni Association. Dr. Bardsley was a former president of the Alumni Association. A project he initiated years ago, the Alumni Phone-a-Thon, now raises about $150, 000 annually. In connection with his 50-year class reunion in 2008, Dr. Bardsley headed an initiative that raised $50, 000 for a new IWU program in Zambia. He enjoyed antique glass collecting, fishing, hunting, golf, and traveling to Central America for mission's trips El Salvador, Honduras, and Mexico. For the past 20 years, Harold has been a collector of the paintings of Rod Crossman, IWU art professor. Harold was also an encouraging mentor, role model and spiritual advisor to his nieces and nephews and grand nieces and nephews. Many others were embraced as a part of the Bardsley family throughout Dr. Bardsley's life. Harold was born in Laketon, Indiana.

Survivors include his wife, Joan McManus; sons, Mark E. (Sharon) Bardsley, Michael R. Bardsley; stepson, Chad P. (Angie) McManus; grandchildren, Zachary and Sara of Marion, Jeremiah, Anthony and Kristen of North Webster, Kyle and Ryle Cathryn of Acworth, Georgia; siblings, Annabelle Hibschman, Greentown, Betty Heaton, South Whitley, Paul (Marilyn) Bardsley, Lake Wales, Florida, Linda (Rev. Joe) Kelly, Marion.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Sarah Catherine Bailey Bardsley; stepmother, Vivian Stanley Bardsley Johnson.

Services are at 10 a.m. in College Wesleyan Church, 200 E. 38th Street, Marion, IN with the Rev. Steve DeNeff officiating. Burial will be in Lancaster Cemetery.

Visitation is from 2 to 5 p.m. and 6 to 8 p.m. Sunday, February 8, in Needham-Storey-Wampner Funeral Service, North Chapel, 1341 North Baldwin Ave., and one hour prior to the service at the church.

Memorials may be made to Indiana Wesleyan University Bardsley, Dunn, Woods Family Scholarship which supports third-year university students in care of the funeral home.
