Obituary of David Milburn Owen

David Milburn Owen, 83, Upland, died Thursday, May 9, 2019, at 8:25 p.m. at University Nursing Center in Upland surrounded by his loving family.  He was born in LaFontaine on March 30, 1936, to Milburn and Ethel (Sutton) Owen.  He married Carol Sue (Richwine) Owen on June 16, 1957, and she survives.

David worked most of his life in manufacturing management and real estate.  His first job started at a very early age when he began farming—as both his grandfather, Milton Owen, and father, Milburn Owen, were farmers.  It was growing up on a farm that instilled in him the importance of hard work and personal responsibility.

Story-telling was something David enjoyed—and he had several to tell.  One of his favorites was about his high school basketball team—LaFontaine High School—and how his small school nearly beat the county’s powerhouse—Wabash High School—in the 1954 sectionals.  It was a game they lost because his coach changed their normal game plan, he always added.  Advice was another thing he loved giving people.  His favorite and most impactful was “Never burn a bridge.” As simple as it sounds, that value has carried through to his family and benefited all who’ve lived by it.

Survivors include his beloved wife of nearly 62 years, Carol Owen, Upland; brother: Allen Owen, Phoenix, Arizona; children: Michael (Diane) Owen, Marion; Amy Owen, Greencastle; and Jill Owen, Upland; grandchildren: Ashley (Brandon) Blackmon, Alexandria; Allysn Law, Muncie; Alex Law, Avon; Zane Owen, Bloomington; Ross (Christie) Owen, Columbus, Ohio; Keaton Owen, Portland, Oregon; and Connor (Stormie) Owen, Marion; and great-grandchildren: Carter Blackmon, Kinlee Blackmon, Ian Moore, Samuel Owen, Harrison Owen, and Silas Owen.

Visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m. on Tuesday, May 14, 2019, at Needham-Storey-Wampner Funeral Service, North Chapel, 1341 N. Baldwin Ave., Marion, IN.

David’s funeral service will be held at 11:30 a.m. on Wednesday, May 15, 2019, at the funeral home with Chaplain Philip Rogers officiating.  Burial will follow at Gardens of Memory in Marion.
