Obituary of John "Johnny" E. Hunter

John “Johnny” E. Hunter, 75, Gas City, passed away at 8:45 a.m. on Thursday, May 9, 2019.  Born in Blackwood, Virginia, on July 3, 1943, Johnny was the son of George Washington and Lena Margarette (Klepper) Hunter.  He married his loving wife, Karen S. Sundberg, and she survives.

Johnny served in the U.S. Army Signal Corps from August 22, 1963 to August 17, 1966.  He achieved the rank of SP4 and received the National Defense Service Medal and Sharpshooter (Rifle) Badge.  Following his military service, he worked as a lineman with the electric company until his retirement. 

He was an active member of the Moose since 1969, having received the Pilgrim Degree in 1987, as well as serving as Athletic Chairman for 12 years, Vice President for 2 years, Ex-Vice for 1 year, State President in 1993, and Deputy Regional Manager of the Indiana Moose Association.  Additionally, he was Past Commander and life member of the American Legion, life member of Marion AMVETS, and charter/life member of the Indiana Higher Degree Council.

He is survived by his wife of 37 years, Karen; sons: John (Kitrina) Hunter; Steve (Lisa) Swafford; daughter, Debra Pirnokis; grandsons: Chance Austin Hunter and Tyler Le Hunter; granddaughter, Roni Carrol; two great-grandsons; and his fur babies, Dakota and Missy Marie.

Preceding him in death were his parents; four brothers; and one sister.

At his wishes, Johnny is going to be cremated.  The family will have a gathering for friends at the Moose Lodge at a later date.  Johnny’s urn will eventually be interred at Marion National Cemetery.
