Buford D. Wilkes, 83, Marion, received his eternal reward at 11:20 p.m. on Saturday, April 5, 2019, at Marion General Hospital. He was born in Alabama on April 12, 1935, to the late Claude and Rose (Thompson) Wilkes. He married his bride of 58 years, Janice Evans and she preceded him in death on December 27, 2018.
Buford proudly served his country in the U.S. Air Force during the Korean War as a pilot on the Air Rescue Team. Flying was his passion. He was the president of the Model Air Plane Club of Indiana. He was a member of the VFW and American Legion. He worked 35 years at the VA Medical Center in Marion as a nurse’s aide. He also owned his own T.V. service in his home in Gas City for 25 years. Buford was an avid sports fan. He loved the Colts, Pacers, IU Hoosiers, Indy 500, Chicago Cubs, and watching golf. He enjoyed wood working and built a lot of things in his home. He was an electrician and also enjoyed traveling. He attended Roseburg Church of God where he was the church treasurer for 30 years.
He is survived his son, Keith (Tracy) Wilkes, Cicero; granddaughter, Jessica Jacks; and great-grandchildren, Lukas Allen, Bennett Jacks, and Emma Lynn Allen.
In addition to his parents and wife, he was preceded in death by his daughter, Laura Lee Wilkes; his brother Ervin Wilkes; and sister, Kathleen Dodd.
Family and friends may call from 4 to 8 p.m. on Monday, April 15, 2019, at Needham-Storey-Wampner Funeral Service, Storey Chapel, 400 E. Main St., Gas City, IN.
A funeral service to celebrate Buford’s life will be held at 1 p.m. on Tuesday, April 16, 2019, at the funeral home with Pastor William Fulda officiating. Burial will follow at Grant Memorial Park.
