Obituary of Lester D. Wimmer

Lester D. Wimmer, 86, died at 1:15 p.m. Tuesday in Community Parkview Care Center, Elwood.

He was born in Green Township, Grant County, to the late Dora M. and Verdie (Eckelbarger) Wimmer. He was a lifelong Point Isabel area resident. He lived on the farm where he was born. He graduated from Swayzee High School, Swayzee, in 1936. He married Emma Mae Rybolt on May 20, 1937. She survives.

Mr. Wimmer retired in 1981 from DaimlerChrysler, Kokomo, after 26 years. He also worked as a fork truck repairman and was past vice president of the United Auto Workers 685 Retirees.

He loved to sing and sang bass in the Marion Male Chorus. He was the last surviving founding member of the Green Township Volunteer Fire Department. He was active with the department for 28 years and had also served as chief for several of those years.

He was a member of Point Isabel United Methodist Church where he served as treasurer for 34 years, taught Sunday school and directed the choir. He was a 50-year member of the Swayzee Masonic Lodge and a member of the Swayzee Order of Eastern Star, where he served as a past patron. He was a past member of the Green Township Lions Club and was an avid golfer and fisherman.

Also surviving are sons, Larry (Carolyn) Wimmer, Russiaville, and Paul (Autumn) Wimmer, Point Isabel; daughters, Kay (Bill) Stocker, Seffner, Fla., and Kathy Warner, New York, N.Y.; 15 grandchildren; 34 great-grandchildren; and three great-great-grandchildren (one is on the way).

He also was preceded in death by a daughter, Linda Mae Wimmer.

Services are at 10 a.m. Saturday in Needham-Storey-Wampner Funeral Service, Rybolt Chapel, 314 N. Washington St., Swayzee, with the Rev. Janet Scott officiating. Burial is in Knox Chapel Cemetery.

Visitation is from 2 to 8 p.m. Friday at the funeral home with a 7:45 p.m. Order of Eastern Star service.
