Obituary of Donald L. Macke
Donald L. Macke, 67, died at 1:15 p.m. Thursday in Marion General Hospital.
He was born in Decatur to the late August F. and Lucille (Bohnke) Macke. He moved in 1990 from Dublin, Ohio, to Marion. He formerly lived in West Lafayette, Fort Wayne, St. Joseph, Mich. and St. Clairsville, Ohio. He was a former member of the Indiana Air National Guard.
He graduated from Hoagland (Ind.) High School and from Purdue University in 1966 with a bachelor of science degree in electrical engineering. He married LaVerne T. Thieme on Oct. 9, 1959. She survives.
Mr. Macke owned Classic Deck Supply of Indiana. He had worked for International Harvester before graduating from college. He also had worked as a senior transmission engineer at I&M General office headquarters, Fort Wayne; was a manager at I&M Cook Nuclear Center, Bridgman, Mich.; president of Wheeling Electric, Wheeling, W.Va.; vice president of public affairs at AEP Service Corp., Columbus, Ohio; division manager of I&M in Marion; and office manager and part owner of Technihome.
He was serving as a member and was a past president of the Grant County Home Builders Association and was a member and associate area vice president of the Indiana Builders Association. He also was a member of St. James Lutheran Church, where he participated in the adult choir, served on the stewardship committee and was co-director of the building committee.
Mr. Macke was also a member of the Marion Downtown Rotary Club and was named a Paul Harris Fellow by the Rotary Foundation of Rotary International.
He was a former board member of the Marion-Grant County Chamber of Commerce, serving six years as vice chairman of governmental affairs. He formerly served on the Community Foundation of Grant County board for 10 years, was former chairman of the distribution committee and served on the finance and marketing committees.
He was a key player in the conception of the Walkway of Lights committee. He also was formerly very active in the United Way in Wheeling.
Also surviving are daughters, Danelle (Mark) Buelsing, Cincinnati, Ohio; Sandra (John) Clevidence, Seville, Ohio; son, Darin (Megan) Macke, McArthur, Ohio; grandchildren, Calvin, Donny and Gabe Clevidence, Anthony and Emily Buelsing, sisters, Aldine (Harry) Benecke, Lake Wales, Fla. and Verna Roberson, Arapahoe, N.C.
He also was preceded in death by a granddaughter, Emma Kristen Clevidence.
Services are at 11:30 a.m. Monday in St. James Lutheran Church, 1206 N. Miller Ave., with the Rev. Mark Carlson officiating. Burial is at 3 p.m. in St. John Cemetery, Bingen.
Visitation is from 2 to 6 p.m. Sunday at Needham-Storey-Wampner Funeral Service, North Chapel, 1341 N. Baldwin Ave., and 10:30 a.m. until services Monday at the church.
