Genia M. Ashley

Genia M. Ashley, 83, Marion, went to be with the Lord at 6:42 a.m. on Sunday, April 7, 2019, at Rolling Meadows Health Care Center in LaFontaine.  She was born in Smithsboro, Kentucky, on November 19, 1935, to the late Manuel and Bertie (Smith) Smith and attended Carr Creek High School in Mallie, Kentucky.

On September 14, 1953, Genia married her loving husband, Jackie “Jack” Ashley.  They shared 65 years together before he passed away last year on December 14, 2018.  Genia deeply loved her husband and family and served each one of them gracefully and sacrificially throughout her life.

Genia always loved having flowers inside and outside of her home, and her cooking was greatly adored by all who knew her.  She could make the best southern-style food, pies, and German chocolate cake.  No one ever left hungry after being at her house.  Genia also loved sitting on her front porch, listening to gospel music, working word search puzzles, and being actively involved in the lives of her children, grandchildren, and church family at Sunnycrest Baptist Church, where she was a member for several years.

She will be missed by her children: Brenda (George) Todd, Marion; Gary Ashley, Noblesville; and Lisa Hoke, Jonesboro; 8 grandchildren, Michael Todd, Stephanie (Anthony) Laws, Rachel (Jordan) Ashley, Megan Ashley, Jessica Hoke, Kelci Hoke, Austin Hoke, and Elijah Hoke; 4 great-grandchildren, Wyatt (Hailey) Todd, Taylor Todd, Steven Laws, and Jordyn Laws; brothers, Paul (Joyce) Smith and William “WB” (Edie) Smith; and several nieces, nephews, and friends.

Also preceding her in death were her son-in-law, Greg Hoke, and sister, Verbena Owens.

The family will receive visitors from 12 noon to 2 p.m. with Genia’s funeral service beginning at 2 p.m. on Thursday, April 11, 2019, in the chapel at College Wesleyan Church, 200 E. 38th St., Marion, IN.  Pastor Alex Mandura will be officiating with burial following at Grant Memorial Park.

Arrangements are entrusted to Needham-Storey-Wampner Funeral Service, North Chapel, 1341 N. Baldwin Ave., Marion, IN.
