Obituary of Maurice Shugart
Maurice A. Shugart, 97, Marion, passed away at Wesleyan Health Care in Marion at 6:45 a.m. on Monday, January 22, 2018. He was born in Marion on May 12, 1920, to the late Mark and Alma (Davis) Shugart. On September 27, 1941, Maurice married his sweetheart, Miriam Baldwin, and they had shared over 75 ½ years together when she preceded him in death on April 23, 2017.
Maurice was a lifelong resident of Grant County and a graduate of Jonesboro High School. He was a successful farmer for over 50 years, an avid reader, and enjoyed basketball. Most important of all was his relationship with the Lord. He was a "man of prayer", caring, kind, and hard-working. He was actively involved in his church at Bethel Friends and held a variety of leadership positions not only in the church but in the Indiana Yearly Meeting of Friends.
He will be missed by his children, Elaine (Joe) Vandegriff, Austin, Texas, Ron (Kathy) Shugart, Marion, Betty Jane (Mike) Fratzke, Jonesboro, Edie (John) Stiner, Titusville, Florida, and Twila (Keith) Bastian, Moorcroft, Wyoming; grandchildren, Jon (Sharon) Vandegriff, Maryland, Joan (Hubert) Tien, Texas, Sherri (Chad) Peters, South Carolina, Steve (Cindy) Shugart, Sweetser, Scott (Angie) Shugart, Fairmount, Michelle (Eric) Fullerton, Ohio, Miriam (Todd) Dalton, Marion, Jossy Stiner, Virginia, Jennifer (Gerrit) DeBoer, Florida, Jeremiah (Meredith) Bastian, Texas, Jamie (John) Timm, Florida, and Jonathan (Jordan) Bastian, Missouri; and 22 great-grandchildren.
Also preceding him in death were his brothers and sisters, Roger Shugart, Louise Pemberton, Paul Shugart, Mark Shugart, Jr., Ruth Ellen Nussbaum, Bob Shugart, and Carol Heiser, as well as his granddaughter, Sharalee.
The family will receive visitors from 4-8 p.m. on Monday, January 29, 2018, at Needham-Storey-Wampner Funeral Service, North Chapel, 1341 N. Baldwin Ave., Marion, IN.
Services to celebrate Maurice's life will be held at 10 a.m. on Tuesday, January 30, 2018, at Bethel Friends Church, 1491 W. 600 S., Jonesboro, IN, with Pastor David Phillips officiating. Burial will follow at Grant Memorial Park.
