John "Grampee" Whelchel, 65, Marion, passed away in Marion General Hospital at 5:40 p.m. on Monday, January 22, 2018. A lifelong resident of Marion, John was born in Marion on August 2, 1952, to the late Raymond and Lois Jean (Clawson) Whelchel. He married Marilyn Oyler on March 12, 1971, and she survives.
John worked at Ball-Foster as a forklift operator and retired in 1996. He loved racing field trial dogs and was a member of Midwest Field Trial. He was also a member of OFTA. John loved his grandchildren and great-grandchildren, and he dearly loved and missed his sons, Randy and Rob Whelchel, and his grandson, Adam Whelchel, who preceded him in death.
He is survived by his loving wife of 46 years, Marilyn; grandsons, Jonathan (Cassi Gross) Whelchel, Sidney, Ohio, and Ryan Whelchel, Gas City; granddaughter, Lindsaye James, Marion; great-grandchildren, Dreaden Foy, Kingston Foy, and Payton Whelchel; brothers, Fred (Kathy) Whelchel, Swayzee, and Dene Whelchel, Marion; and sister, Nancy Cox, Marion.
Also preceding him in death was his sister, Beckie Lucas.
The family will receive visitors from 4-8 p.m. on Friday, January 26, 2018, at Needham-Storey-Wampner Funeral Service, Storey Chapel, 400 E. Main St., Gas City, IN.
Services to celebrate John's life will be held at 11:30 a.m. on Saturday, January 27, 2018, at the funeral home with Pastor Gary Ashbrooke officiating. Burial will follow at Grant Memorial Park.
He and the boys are now racing dogs together in Heaven.
