It is with great sadness that the family of Michael Richard Thorne announces his passing after a brief illness on Saturday, December 30, 2017, at the age of 79. Michael was born in Hartford City, Indiana, on November 5, 1938. Michael will be lovingly remembered by his wife of 57 years, Rosalie (Spahr) and his children, Stephanie (Mike) Millspaugh, Cindy (John) Tyra, his two brothers, Patrick Thorne and Jeffrey (Judy) Thorne, his four grandchildren, Zachary (Lindi) Stepp, A J Stepp, Abbie Millspaugh, and Ryan Millspaugh, by 7 nieces and nephews, and by 2 great grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents Richard and Phyllis Thorne and a sister Kathleen Apperson.
Michael attended Ball State University and graduated from Indiana Wesleyan University with a degree in Biology and a Masters in Education and Principal's Certification. At Ball State University he was a member of Lambda Chi Alpha fraternity. Michael was also instrumental in starting up the Boy's and Girl's Clubs in Marion.
As we loved you, so we miss you. In memory you are near. Loved, remembered, longed for always, bringing many a silent tear. Michael was a quiet, personal man whose entire life was focused on his family and close friends. He was in education, mostly as a principal, in the Marion Community School system for 38 years. A cheerful, positive, and certainly friendly man, his doors were always open if something were needed. He loved the outdoors and fishing was his passion for his entire life. After his retirement from education, he spent most of his time, when he was not fishing, working in his woodworking shop creating everything from furniture to the yearly Christmas gifts which still adorn the homes of many of the family. For more than a decade, after their retirement, Mike and Rosalie wintered in Florida and attained a second family of very close friends from all ports of call. Michael lived a full and amazing life and, in turn, gave us all one. We know that his love will follow us, stay with us, and assure us we are never alone.
