Ted Flannigan, Jr. 79, Marion, passed away at 8 p.m. in his home on Friday, March 9, 2018. He was born in Marion on August 31, 1938, to the late Lewis and Edith (Fox) Flannigan and was a lifelong resident of Grant County. On September 14, 1973, Ted married Gail A. DeLong, and they shared 43 years together until her passing on September 15, 2016.
Ted graduated from Mississinewa High School in 1957 and retired from the Marion VA Hospital after serving 36 years as a fireman/nursing assistant. He was a life member of Mill Township Fire Department and was a great mentor to many firefighters, as well as a great fire truck pump operator. He followed his dad all through life even dying on the same day. Ted attended South Marion Church of Christ.
Ted was proclaimed as "The World's Best Checkers Player" and was a big prankster who loved to tease. He enjoyed following the Indianapolis Colts and college football. He also enjoyed riding his bicycle.
He is survived by his daughter, Cindy (John) Atkinson, Marion; brother, Charles (Linda) Flannigan, Pensacola, Florida; sister, Laura (Bob) McCoy, California; grandchildren, Jack (Angie) Kelly, Missouri, Tim (Brandy) Horn, Gas City, Shelli Flannigan, Kentucky, and Amanda Carter, Marion; 9 great-grandchildren and 1 great-great-grandchild; and lifelong friend of 71 years, Ronnie Herring.
Also preceding him in death were his son, Randy Flannigan; daughter, Laura Flynn; and step-son, Forest Gruber.
Special thanks to his nephew, Joe Johnson, for his care of Ted at home for the last year and a half, as well as to the doctors, nurses, and physical therapists at Twin City Health Care for getting him ready to go home.
The family will receive visitors from 4 to 8 p.m. on Wednesday, March 14, 2018, at Needham-Storey-Wampner Funeral Service, Storey Chapel, 400 E. Main St., Gas City, IN.
Services to celebrate Ted's life will be held at 11:30 a.m. on Thursday, March 15, 2018, at the funeral home with Tim Purdom officiating. Burial will follow at Riverside Cemetery.
